Travelling through the Valtellina and across towns and villages such as Sondrio (chief town of the Province), Tirano, Grosio and Sondalo, with peaks at 1225 m. a.s.l., you reach a wide basin that opens up in front of you and that is actually where three valleys meet (Valdisotto, Valfurva and Valdidentro).
In this superb, broad and radiant position, at the foot of the Stelvio Pass, surrounded by the peaks of the Ortler-Cevedale mountain range and Reit Mount is BORMIO. Early settlements were Retis and Celts, then the Romans came ( the first to discover the hot underground springs of Bormio thermal baths).
In Medieval times, all the most important noble families, including the Sforzas and the Viscontis, took an interest in the town, due to its strategic geographic position to control the Alpine passes. Nowadays, the old centre of Bormio, which dates back to 14th-15th centuries, is at the heart of the biggest skiing complex of the Valley and is the starting point for excursions and escalations of the surrounding Alpine range peaks.
